Bluegrass Noir – Black Walnut, Zebrawood and Chaos End Grain Cutting and Serving Board
Whether you're preparing a family meal, carving a holiday roast, serving charcuterie to guests, or placing a dramatic centerpiece on your kitchen island, Bluegrass Noir is designed to combine serious function with bold visual impact.
I named this board Bluegrass Noir as a Kentucky-inspired play on contrast. “Bluegrass” ties the piece to the Commonwealth, while “Noir” reflects the deep, dark walnut and the dramatic overall character of the board.
Handcrafted from black walnut and zebrawood with a multi-species chaos strip, Bluegrass Noir is one of the largest end grain cutting boards I have made. The walnut center incorporates both heartwood and sapwood, which I deliberately arranged so the natural color variation becomes part of the finished pattern. The chaos strip introduces additional color and movement, while the zebrawood border frames the entire piece with its unmistakable striped grain.
The result is a board with a strong, architectural look and a lot of visual depth. The colors come entirely from the natural wood itself without the use of dyes or stains.
Beautiful enough to display and built to be used, Bluegrass Noir makes an impressive cutting, carving, or serving board. Its size makes it especially well suited for larger presentations, including charcuterie, breads, cheeses, carved meats, or a full spread for family and guests. It is the kind of board that naturally draws attention whenever it is brought to the table.
End grain construction is prized for its durability and knife-friendly surface. The wood fibers stand vertically, allowing the cutting surface to better absorb knife impact, minimize visible scoring, and help reduce wear on your knife edges.
Every board is thoroughly conditioned with food-grade mineral oil, then protected with a hand-applied coat of natural beeswax and carefully buffed to a smooth satin finish. A complimentary 2 oz tin of Larson Wood Designs Board Butter is included to help keep your board looking its best for years to come.
