Kentucky Ember – Cherry End Grain Cutting and Serving Board
Whether you're preparing everyday meals, carving a roast, serving charcuterie, or displaying a handcrafted centerpiece on your countertop, Kentucky Ember is designed to be both a hardworking kitchen tool and a visually striking serving piece.
I named this board Kentucky Ember for the warm reds, browns, amber tones, and lighter areas found naturally throughout the cherry. The color and movement reminded me of the shifting tones found in a bed of glowing embers.
Handcrafted from cherry, Kentucky Ember was designed around the natural contrast between heartwood and sapwood. I intentionally organized the strips so the lighter sapwood and darker heartwood would create a repeating geometric composition once the board was cut and reassembled into end grain.
The diamonds, points, and lighter shapes across the surface come entirely from the natural color of the cherry. No dyes or stains are used to create the pattern. The wood provides the color, while the arrangement of the strips creates the design.
Beautiful enough to display and built to be used, Kentucky Ember works equally well as a cutting board, carving board, or serving board. Its larger size gives it plenty of room for breads, cheeses, charcuterie, carved meats, appetizers, or a full table spread, while the end grain pattern makes it a natural centerpiece when entertaining.
End grain construction is prized for its durability and knife-friendly surface. The wood fibers stand vertically, allowing the cutting surface to better absorb knife impact, reduce visible scoring, and help keep knife edges sharper for longer.
Cherry also develops a richer, deeper color with age and exposure to light, allowing the board’s character to continue evolving over time.
Every board is thoroughly conditioned with food-grade mineral oil, then protected with a hand-applied coat of natural beeswax and carefully buffed to a smooth satin finish. A complimentary 2 oz tin of Larson Wood Designs Board Butter is included to help keep your board looking its best for years to come.
